What is Chiropractic?

Your neck and back hurts, and medical treatments and physical therapy alone do not seem to work. With every step, reach, twist, lift and bend the pain stops you in your tracks. Or perhaps it comes and goes. Like millions of Americans you have gone to great lengths and great expense to find relief, any relief. How about a combination of medical treatments with physical therapy AND Chiropractic?

Chiropractors specialize in back and neck pain. That's their primary focus. Their main area of expertise. They are experts and unequaled in their knowledge of the back and neck. They offer hands-on, effective treatments. Treatments do not include surgery or medications. The reason for no medications: we feel that the body can heal itself if given the chance. Give your body it's chance, before drugs and surgery! You'll be glad you did.

"Chiropractic care for my child? Why? His back doesn't bother him"

A Spinal Check-Up For Your Child Could Be One Of The Most Important Check-Ups In His or Her Life

How often chiropractors have heard that said from parents who appreciate the importance of having check-ups for their child's teeth, hearing, eyes, ears, nose and throat, but when it comes to a spinal check-up they think it isn't necessary.

The spine is the lifeline of the body. Inside the spinal column is the spinal cord, a bundle containing billions of nerve fibers that will travel to every part of your child's body, sending messages and energy from the brain that regulate your child's health.

If there is any nerve blockage along the spinal cord, any nerve damage, then a state of dis-ease will develop. Dis-ease causes a generalized weakening of your child's body, lowered resistance to disease, and is a major contributor to body malfunction and sickness.

Most spinal column nerve blockages are caused by tiny fixations and misalignments of the spinal vertebrae. These tiny misalignments are called vertebral subluxations.
How can a child's spine lose alignment?
The First Subluxation: Spinal nerve damage, also known as vertebral subluxations can have many causes. Some injuries to the spine are caused during the birth process by obstetrical procedures.

For example, forceps are capable of causing damage to the newborn's spine, especially when they are used to pull or twist the head and neck. Babies were meant to be pushed and guided out of the birth canal-not pulled out.

Birth Without Violence: Immediately after birth, what do doctors do to the baby's spine? Have you ever seen the doctor dangling the baby by the feet? This is a too common occurrence, and the famous French obstetrician Frederick Leboyer commented on it in his book "Birth Without Violence.

Whiplash Shake Syndrome
: Recently the medical profession recognized the Whiplash Shake Syndrome (WSS) which occurs when a baby is severely shaken. It can cause blindness, paralysis, convulsions, brain and/or eye damage. This is something chiropractors recognized nearly a century ago.

Childhood: Childhood is a very physical time for all of us. The falls, the accidents, the jumping and running are all part of childhood, and yet, they can cause spinal misalignments and nerve damage. It would be wise for all parents to have their children's spine checked repeatedly, on a periodic basis throughout their growing up years.

A Family Affair: The most gratifying thing a chiropractor sees in his or her office is an entire family coming in for spinal check-ups. They notice differences: the father has more energy, and doesn't have the digestive problem he used to, the mother who doesn't get her headaches anymore and her menstrual cramps are a thing of the past, the children don't get sick as often, they miss less days from school and have better posture. In fact, there have recently been studies determining the effectiveness of chiropractic on emotional and learning disabilities and other neurological problems in children.

Psychological Studies: Two pilot studies in Texas in the 1970's confirmed what chiropractors have known for years-that spinal adjustments can help children with emotional, behavioral and neurological problems. The kind of problems helped were hyperactivity, asthma, anxiety, low mental stamina, discipline problems, inability to concentrate and even low I.Q. and grades.

If your child is suffering from any of these common conditions it is essential that his or her spine is checked for vertebral subluxation:

  • Fever
  • Hypertension
  • Constipation
  • Stomach Ache
  • Arthritis
  • Headaches
  • Sore Throat
  • Sinus Problems
  • Bronchitis
  • Poor Concentration
  • Hip, Leg, Foot Pain

  • Neck Aches
  • Eye Problems
  • Skin Disorders
  • Frequent Colds
  • Arm, Hand Pain
  • Scoliosis
  • Croup
  • Nervousness
  • Weakened or Fatigue
  • Ear Infections
  • Irritability
  • Backaches
  • Cough
  • Asthma and Wheezing
  • Poor Coordination
  • Painful Joints

Pregnancy & Chiropractic

Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy
Regular chiropractic care is an integral part of the prenatal and postpartum care during pregnancy. It helps keep mom feeling good and assists her in coping with the physical stresses of an ever changing body.

Neuromuscular and Biochemical Changes During Pregnancy

During pregnancy, most women experience a number of neuromuscular and biochemical problems which respond favorably to gentle, safe, noninvasive chiropractic care.

These include:

  • release of the hormone relaxing causes muscle and ligament relaxation
    • allows joints to more easily misalign
  • increased weight gain
    • increased demand and fatigue on spinal and pelvic muscles
    • increased stress on spinal and pelvic ligaments
    • increase in lumbar and thoracic spinal curves which further increase the above
    • increased joint stress and thus occurrence of vertebral and sacroiliac joint misalignments
  • change in weight distribution
    • increased demand and fatigue on spinal and pelvic muscles
    • increased stress on spinal and pelvic ligaments
    • increase in lumbar and thoracic spinal curves which further increase the above
    • increased joint stress and thus occurrence of vertebral and sacroiliac joint misalignments

The above changes primarily affect the pelvic and spinal ligaments, muscles, joints and other supportive soft tissues. These changes cause sprain/strains of pelvic and spinal structures, as well as alteration of the normal spinal curvatures and spinal biomechanics. The result is an increased stress on the body leading to pain and discomfort.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe During Pregnancy?
Chiropractic care during pregnancy is safe for both mother and fetus. Spinal adjustments are especially gentle during pregnancy as far less force is required to correct subluxations. This is due to the increase in hormones causing significant muscle and ligamentous relaxation. Special "adjustive" positions are also used to provide comfort and safety for both mom and fetus.

How Often Should I Receive Chiropractic Care During My Pregnancy?
The frequency of care varies for a number of different reasons. Typically, regular care during a non-complicated pregnancy will range from once per week to once per month.
Chiropractic and Pregnancy Scientific Studies

Low Back Pain During Pregnancy

In this study, researchers identified the sacroiliac joints of the pelvis (frequently "adjusted" by chiropractors) as being responsible for the majority of low back pain cases in pregnancy. This is due to the significant number of hormonal and biomechanical changes occurring in the pelvis during pregnancy. Researchers found 7/10 women were helped by spinal manipulation in this study.

TextBook on Chiropractic & Pregnancy

According to Dr. Fallon, author and internationally recognized "chiropractic pediatrician", statistics from her office "have demonstrated that chiropractic adjustments effectively reduce the average amount of time spent in labor." Her data shows a nearly 25% reduction in the average labor times in those receiving chiropractic care versus the generally accepted average labor time - in women who had given birth in the past, there was a 33% reduction in average labor time.

Seniors & Chiropractic

Natural Wellness For Life!

Getting older doesn't mean you have to "feel" old - or act it. You probably know people in their 60's, 70's and beyond with the energy, enthusiasm, activity and zest for life of people half their age.

If that's your goal too, chiropractic can be just what the doctor ordered: wellness care rather than the treatment of pain, disease and symptoms. Chiropractic helps you maintain your good health over the entire course of your life-including your golden years.

A recent study found that older people who utilize chiropractic care report better overall health, fewer symptomatic chronic conditions, shorter stays in hospitals and nursing homes, and more mobility than seniors who were not using chiropractic care. This three year study, headed by Ian Coulter, Ph.D., of the prestigious Rand Corporation Research Institute, also showed that older people who use chiropractic on a regular, periodic basis were less likely to use prescription drugs and more likely to exercise regularly and participate in community activities. This investigation suggests the potential for chiropractic care to address the preventive and rehabilitative needs of the older patient, which hopefully will be addressed more specifically in future research.

For over a century, Doctors of Chiropractic (D.C.s) have been devoted to "whole-body" natural healthcare-care-care that does not rely on costly surgery and hospitalization or medications. Most of all, chiropractors are trained in maintaining wellness through gentle, safe and effective techniques and counseling that can help you stay vibrant and active no matter what your age. Chiropractic is as committed to helping older people look and feel years younger as it is to hands-on natural healing. That's why millions of healthy, active people trust their care to a Doctor of Chiropractic.

You may be surprised to learn that one in five adults, age 55-64 has visited a chiropractor. And it's estimated that people over 65 make up nearly one-fifth of a chiropractor's practice. While a number of people visit their chiropractor for back pain or headache, many patients report improvement with symptoms of arthritis or other chronic ailments associated with aging. Of course, with concerns about over-medication and the potential side-effects of combining various drugs, the simple, natural effectiveness of chiropractic care is very reassuring.

Chiropractors are trained to recognize that older people have special needs. Your chiropractor understands care and management goals must be tailored to each unique health situation and lifestyle. Chiropractic can help to restore and maintain joint, muscles, nerve and soft tissue health. This is important as you get older because it keeps you fit and flexible, feeling good and able to enjoy many types of physical activity. Your chiropractor's involvement in your total wellness goes far beyond spinal adjustments. He or she can:

  • Counsel you on how to employ flexibility and weight-bearing exercise for better health
  • Offer guidance on diet, nutrition and supplements
  • Advise you about weight control, and maintaining healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels
  • Help you cope with osteoporosis and osteoarthritis
